If you have a family member who is incarcerated, the best way to keep in touch with them is to use an inmate texting app. These apps are designed to be in compliance with prison regulations which allow family and friends text inmate to send messages, pictures videos, eCards, video calls and even money to their prison trust account. In addition to these messaging apps, there are also many federal inmate applications that provide additional services like video visits and phone calls.
The JPay application, for example allows family and friends to pay money into the trust account of an inmate, along with photos, email, eCards, and video grams. It also lets them make personalized postcards featuring personal photos. And it provides a safer and more secure alternative to traditional postal mail.
Another popular inmate text application is GettingOut, which offers "simple and reliable communication" between inmates and their loved family members. The app, which is available in select correctional facilities, allows inmates to upload photos and message their family members and friends using their tablets. Inmates pay $0.25 per message and their loved ones pay the data costs to access them (but there are no explicit images). You can also make use of the GettingOut app to share pictures on Facebook or Foursquare and check in on Foursquare and include a video in upload to YouTube upload.
